GPS/Navigational Skills Course

Mountain Navigation / GPS Skills Course
Sept 24-26, 2010
$175 / person

Prepare yourself to travel through the backcountry. This is a course in the use of map and compass
reading with topographical maps as well as an introduction to GPS (Global Positioning System)
equipment for navigation and data collection, and route planning using computer based navigation
systems such as National Geographic TOPO!.

Students move from general compass and topographical map reading to developing more advanced map reading techniques using GPS to pinpoint locations as well as being able to determine routes in obscured weather conditions without visual cues. Map reading is
an integral skill for backcountry travel and with the use of GPS, one of the most advanced methods for
accurate position locating as a navigational aid. Both skills can be invaluable tools in emergency
